Millions of people around the world already eat insects, which are also a more environmentally friendly alternative to cattle farming and other larger sources of protein.
Frogs’ legs coated in insect powder could become the next European haute cuisine delicacy after the EU approved eating insects for the first time.
The European Commission said on Tuesday that dried mealworms can now be sold in the 27-nation European Union following a decision by EU governments on Monday and a food safety assessment.
European Union officials have suggested that insects could be used as a protein supplement in cookies, pasta or baked goods as they seek to convince picky eaters that insects are already eaten by millions of people around the world. Insects are also a greener alternative to cattle farming and other sources of protein. The edible insect market is expected to reach $4.6 billion by 2027, according to a report released earlier this year.
“It is up to the consumer to decide whether to eat insects. The use of insects as an alternative source of protein is nothing new,” the EU website says.
