Millions of people around the world already eat insects, which are also a more environmentally friendly alternative to raising cattle and other larger sources of protein.
Frogs’ legs coated in insect powder could become the next European haute cuisine delicacy after the European Union approved the eating of insects for the first time.
The European Commission said on Tuesday that dried mealworms can now be sold in the 27-nation European Union following a decision by EU governments on Monday and a food safety assessment.
EU officials have suggested that insects could be used as a protein supplement in biscuits, pasta and baked goods, seeking to convince picky eaters that insects are already eaten by millions of people around the world. Insects are also a more environmentally friendly alternative to cattle farming and other sources of protein. The edible insect market is expected to reach $4.6 billion by 2027, according to a report published earlier this year.
“It is up to the consumer to decide whether to eat insects. The use of insects as an alternative source of protein is not something new,” the EU website says.
