Recommended: Combine crickets and mealworms with Creamier ice cream.

SINGAPORE – With Halloween just a week away, the ice cream from home-grown ice cream chain Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee is finally ready to be enjoyed.
No, these are not chewy candies or chocolates. These are dried mealworms and crickets from Insectyumz, supplied by local company Insect Food, an importer and supplier of insect feed approved for human consumption.
For a limited time, Creamier is offering insects as an optional topping ($1.50 each) on a variety of ice cream flavors ($4.90-$6.50 per scoop).
Somehow I wasn’t as horrified when I found out that the insects were just ice cream toppings, not the ice cream itself.
Of course, it would be easier to eat the ice cream if I couldn’t see the whole insect, but I’m not going to waste a precious scoop of ice cream if I don’t like it.
If you’re put off by the “original flavor” of dried mealworms, opt for less scary pre-seasoned cheese crickets or salted egg crickets.
Think of them as salty protein chips, get over the initial shock and enjoy the crunch and flavor.
The insects are best paired with nut ice creams, like Halloween-inspired chargrilled black sesame and signature roasted pistachios, or for the purists, real chocolate.
As edible insects become more popular, I believe more people will view insects as a snack rather than a joke.
