SINGAPORE – With Halloween just a week away, the crawling ice creams at home-made ice cream chain Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee are finally edible.
No, it’s not fudge or chocolate. It’s dried mealworms and crickets from Insectyumz, supplied by local company Insect Food, an importer and supplier of insect food approved for human consumption.
For a limited time, Creamier is offering insects as an optional topping ($1.50 each) on a variety of ice cream flavors ($4.90-$6.50 per scoop).
Somehow, I wasn’t as horrified when I found out that the insects were added as a topping and not part of the ice cream itself.
Of course, it would be easier to eat the ice cream if I couldn’t see the whole insect, but I’m not going to waste a precious scoop of ice cream if I don’t like it.
If you’re put off by the “original flavor” of dried mealworms, opt for less scary pre-seasoned cheese crickets or salted egg crickets.
Think of them like salty protein chips: Get past the initial shock and enjoy the crunch and flavor.
Insects pair best with nutty ice creams, such as the Halloween-themed chargrilled black sesame ice cream and the signature roasted pistachio ice cream. For those who prefer pure chocolate, there’s also ice cream.
As edible insects become more popular, I believe more people will view insects as a snack rather than a joke.
